Top Destinations in Italy

Italy, the Italian Republic, is located in South-Central Europe bordering France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia. Besides the Italian peninsula, Italy also includes the two largest islands in the Mediterranean sea, Sicily and Sardinia. The country is also home to two independent states, San Marino and the Vatican City. The country boasts a temperate climate making year-round travel practical. The country is best known for its capital city of Rome, which is also know as the religious capital of Western civilization.

In 2005, Italy’s quality of life index was ranked in the top 10. Italians enjoy a high standard of living, but that also means that your Italian travels can be quite pricey. Regardless, Italy offers many attractive tourist destinations.  Below is a list of our top seven.

Cinque Terre National Park

The Five Lands, or Cinque Terre, is a rugged portion of the Italian Riviera. It is composed of five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Tourist and residents alike are attracted to the areas lack of corporate development. Beautiful cliffside terraces overlook the the Mediterranean Sea. Another trait of Cinque Terre is the lack of through automobile traffic. It is inaccessible by from the outside by car. Only paths, trains and boats connect the villages.

Visitors will enjoy singing gondoliers, the beautiful Piazza San Marco, and Venetian Lagoon. Take long walk along the canals and marvel at the unique Venetian residences. Alicante, Spain

Alicante, Spain has been inhabited for over 7,000 years and is home to the historic Mediterranean port of Alicante. It is currently one of the fastest growing cities in Spain with the beaches of the Costa Blanca attracting many tourists.

The city also boasts the University of Alicante, which currently enrolls thousands of students, as well as Ciudad de la Luz, one of the largest film studios in Europe.

Alicante is home to a variety of ethnic groups, including those from other European countries, as well as Africa and the Americas.

Mediterranean climate

Enjoy a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters, and warm, hot summers with little chance of rain.  Temperatures rarely fall below six degrees Celsius in January and approach 90 degrees Fahrenheit in August.

Transport…

Alicante’s airport is among the busiest in Spain with connections to many major European cities. Trains allow easy commutes to the suburbs as wells as Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia.  Inner city travel along the Costa Blanca is also convenient with electric and diesel tram lines available, which also connect to outlying settlements.  Even the Balearic Islands and Algeria can be reached by regular ferry service.

Sites to see…

Tourists should visit the Castle of Santa Barbara and the port of Alicante.  The centuries old castle overlooks the city from Mont Benacantil.

Travelers should also make their way to the promenade Explanda de Espana. This amazing promenade is lined with palm trees and paved with marble tiles allowing for wonderful evening strolls along the waterfront.

The Barrio de la Santa Cruz should not go unvisited as it is the most vibrant portion of the old city, with its narrow streets and creative floral decorations leading through to the panoramic views on the decks of L’Ereta Park and on to the castle.

Tabarca Island, once a home to pirates, is also a beautiful tourist attraction as are the many other venues worthy of visiting on your journey to Alicante, Spain.

Travel the USA

Even a lifetime may not be enough for the average person to experience all that the U.S.A. has to offer, but it’s never too late to start.  Here are a few good places to start:

  • Seattle, Washington
  • New York, New York
  • Denver, Colorado
  • Phoenix, Arizona
  • Memphis, Tennessee
  • Cleveland, Ohio

USA Passport Application

You should file your completed passport application at a US Post Office authorized to accept passport applications. You will need proof of US Citizenship (certified copy of birth certificate), a signature photo ID, and two identical 2″ x 2″ passport photos.
Passports processing may take up to four weeks in some cases so you better take care of this well in advance.

If you already have a passport, remember to check your passport’s expiry date before your trip.  Make sure it’s valid for at least a while after your planned return.  However, don’t fret if your passport expires while you are on your trip – you can renew it at any U.S. Embassy in the EU within a few days time.

Travel Documents

Your travel documents may include some travel literature. We recommend reviewing this literature prior to departure in order to better familiarize yourself with your destination.  You will encounter a wealth of advice and essential information to make your vacation as enjoyable as possible.

You should plan your travel budget well in advance to allocate funds for special events, such as theatrical events, fine dinning, shopping, and additional excursions.

We advise you to travel light.  Loosing your wallet full of cash may leave you in an uncomfortable situation. However, a replacement credit card may reach you within 24 hours.  You may take some cash with you, but nowadays you can pay with Visa and MasterCard and withdraw local currency at an ATM just about everywhere and you’ll get a better exchange rate once you’re on location.  Make sure you call your credit card provider and/or bank to inform them of your travel; otherwise you may not be able to use your card at foreign locations.  You may consider adding a travel insurance package to your credit card and use it for all your travel related expenses. It should cover you in case of an unforeseen event.  You should also inquire into foreign transaction fees to see which option is best for you. Travelers Checks make converting into local cash at your destination a little more comfortable. We also suggest varying denominations of travelers checks to facilitate budget management.  It is difficult to exchange foreign currencies once you return to the United States so we recommend change your currency back to USD while still in the city center.  Watch out for airport currency exchange; their rates are disadvantageous – you are better off spending it on duty free shopping!
